NDNQI Data Connects Nurse Staffing, Patient Outcomes in All Clinical Areas

The nation's largest database assessing nursing care quality has expanded its measures of nurse staffing to the entire clinical practice area of hospitals by adding several new patient care unit types (emergency departments, perioperative services and perinatal services).  The data can assist hospitals in developing staffing plans and strategies to improve outcomes, such as reductions in patient falls and infections that result from hospitalization.  AWHONN, the Emergency Nurses Association, and the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses worked with ANA in developing the method to quantify staffing levels per amount of patient time spent in each of the three respective care areas.

AWHONN Partners with the Council on Patient Safety in Women's Health Care

Rates of severe maternal morbidity and maternal mortality in the United States are increasing and are now at levels at least twice as those seen in Western Europe. The most common preventable conditions resulting in severe maternal morbidity or mortality are obstetric hemorrhage, severe hypertension, and venous thromboembolism. To address these growing concerns, AWHONN is working independently and in collaboration with the multi-stakeholder Council on Patient Safety in Women's Health Care. The aims of the Council are to promote safe care for every woman, reduce harm associated with severe maternal morbidity, and ultimately, reduce maternal mortality. AWHONN supported the formation of the Council to help consolidate, harmonize, and develop tools and resources that clinicians and administrators can easily and effectively put to use within their own communities.
