My AWHONN Resources

At the foundation of AWHONN's Perinatal Staffing Initiatives is the publication of the AWHONN Guidelines for Professional Registered Nurse Staffing for Perinatal Units (2010). These comprehensive Guidelines reflect the increased complexity of today's perinatal settings and detail the effects of change and trends in perinatal care on nursing care and workloads. The goal is to promote a safe environment and allow perinatal RNs to spend more time caring for mothers and babies.

Principle-based staffing is the context for AWHONN's staffing guidelines and there is a growing body of evidence that indicates higher nurse staffing is associated with:

  • Lower hospital-related morbidity and mortality;
  • Fewer failure to rescue events and other adverse patient events; and
  • Shorter inpatient stays.

AWHONN offers a host of perinatal staffing initiatives and services for hospitals and facilities of every size and within every budget.
