New Research - New Name (Anaphylactoid Syndrome of Pregnancy) - New Understanding of the Complex Barrier Between Maternal-Fetal Physiology
Amniotic Fluid Embolism now
called Anaphylactoid Syndrome of Pregnancy is a rare, catastrophic event.
For decades, this rare event was believed to be embolic in nature,
but contemporary research strongly suggests that its etiology is immunologic.
This new insight into this phenomenon is a result of significant advances in
the understanding of the complex barrier between maternal-fetal physiology.
It is important that nurses know the fundamental
knowledge needed for early recognition and management
of
women with Anaphylactoid Syndrome of Pregnancy to decrease the likelihood of
maternal death. Armed with new insights into the etiology and pathophysiology of
this syndrome, the multidisciplinary health care team can mobilize to intervene and improve
patient outcomes during labor.
