5 Things You Need To Know About Magnesium Sulfate

Magnesium sulfate has been used for many years to prevent seizures in preeclampsia and as a tocolytic to treat preterm labor contractions.  There is now a growing body of research that nurses and other clinicians should be aware of about the neuroprotective effects of this medication.  Current evidence suggests that magnesium sulfate administered before birth can preserve the brain function and reduce the risks of cerebral palsy in preterm newborns.

It is also important that clinicians understand the current safety considerations and precautions needed to safely administer magnesium sulfate and to protect maternal and fetal well-being.

This webinar is essential for nurses and other clinicians to maintain competent, safe practice and to educate parents about the benefits and risks of magnesium sulfate therapy.

5 important things you will learn about magnesium sulfate on January 24:

    1. Evidence regarding the neuroprotective benefits of magnesium sulfate.

    2. How to recognize and evaluate available data regarding protocols for magnesium sulfate neuroprotection.

    3. ACOG recommendations for neuroprotection clinical protocols.

    4. Important safety measures when administering magnesium sulfate including current guidelines for frequency of maternal-fetal assessment, intravenous pump administration, and AWHONN recommended nurse staffing ratios for women receiving magnesium sulfate.

    5. How to identify and act on warning signs of potential magnesium sulfate overdose.

Plus, case studies of medication errors related to magnesium sulfate administration with a focus on prevention!
