Key Initiatives

AWHONN Key Initiatives demonstrate our commitment to promoting the health of women and newborns. Learn about AWHONN goals and priorities which inspire key initiatives.

Late Preterm (Near-Term) Infant Initiative

Launched in 2005, this multi-year initiative addresses the special needs of infants born between 34 and 36 completed weeks of gestation.

In 2007, release of the Optimizing Health of the Late Preterm Infant presentation package and the Late Preterm Infant Assessment Guide provide important information on the assessment and care for these vulnerable newborns.

In late 2007, AWHONN launched a national multi-year research-based practice project.  Johnson & Johnson Pediatric Institute, LLC, is the Premiere Partner for this initiative.

Online Education

AWHONN utilizes advanced technology to offer online learning opportunities for nurses in various practice settings.

.

Fetal Heart Monitoring Program

AWHONN is the established leader in fetal heart monitoring education for nurses. In 2006, AWHONN added CNE to its fetal heart monitoring program, now used by nurses, physicians and other health care providers! With recent updates in the Intermediate and Advanced Courses, and the new online Introduction to Fetal Monitoring Course, AWHONN remains on the forefront.

.

AWHONN Journals

AWHONN publishes two award-winning journals, included with membership.  Each edition offers CNE opportunities.

  • Nursing for Women's Health (formerly AWHONN Lifelines), a clinical practice journal, offers the most recent and compelling health care information on women's health, newborn care and professional nursing issues.

.

Nursing Informatics

AWHONN aims to lead the profession in nursing informatics for perinatal and women’s health nursing. The 2005 WHNE advisory panel presented a challenge to AWHONN:  to develop a tool that enables benchmarking of women’s health services nationally.

In response, AWHONN launched the AWHONN EDGE™ Benchmarking Database, with the beta phase of development launched in late 2007.

To further support women's health services executives, AWHONN plans to release a nursing informatics guide for use by nurse executives in selecting and implementing electonic medical records systems.

.

Public Health Campaigns & Media Coverage

AWHONN is a preferred source on a range of women’s health and professional nursing issues, including perinatal depression, the nursing shortage, and more; as well as a co-sponsor of multiple public health awareness campaigns.
