Education and Training
You've heard the saying that we never stop learning. This is especially true for nurses. Technology, techniques, standards and medications change so frequently, that it is essential for your career and your patient's safety that you proactively pursue continuing education and training opportunities. While most employers and state licensing boards require nurses to complete a certain number of continuing education courses a year, obtaining additional professional training and education has other benefits. It can be an ideal way to find out whether you have an interest in or aptitude for a different nursing specialty; it is a great way to network with other professionals who share your interests; it expands your career options by strengthening your skills.
Continuing Education-The Tools to Make You an Outstanding Candidate
All nurses must keep their skills current in order to provide up-to-date patient care, advance their career and maintain their licensure with their state board of nursing. Being able to demonstrate a commitment to obtaining continuing education, training, and accreditation is especially important when job hunting. Employers won't consider candidates for new jobs or promotions who don't have a verifiable track record of pursuing and obtaining continuing education credits and other kinds of professional training.
Continuing education (CE) credits are typically earned through short classes at professional conferences, workshops, on the internet or in journals. The amount of CE hours required to maintain your licensure varies by state, so check with your state board of nursing (http://www.ncsbn.org/).
