Sexually Transmitted Infections Including HIV: Impact on Women's Reproductive Health
2008
Catherine Ingram Fogel, BSN, MS, PhD and Beth Perry Black, RN, MSN, PhD

The purpose of the Sexually Transmitted Infections Including HIV: Impact on Women's Reproductive Health module is to provide the perinatal nurse with essential clinical information concerning sexually transmitted infections (STIs), a critical public health problem that disproportionately affects women and children. The module includes information on the scope of the problem; pathogens associated with STIs; epidemiology of specific STIs; risk factors; modes of transmission; and complications associated with common STIs. The module identifies nursing interventions for women's sexual health; safer sex guidelines; screening procedures; and counseling. Particular attention is paid to the effects of STIs on the health of pregnant women and their newborns. In addition, the module addresses the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended treatment guidelines for specific STIs and HIV.
