Dr. Susan A. Albrecht Receives the 2015 Distinguished Professional Service Award


Washington, DC, June 15, 2015 – The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) presented its highest honor, the Distinguished Professional Service Award, to Susan A. Albrecht, PhD, CRNP, FAAN, for her contributions to the field of women’s health and newborn care. The award was presented at the AWHONN national Convention in Long Beach, California and is sponsored by the JOHNSON’S® Brand.


 Dr. Albrecht is an Associate Professor of Maternal-Child Nursing and the Associate Dean for External Relations at the University of Pittsburgh. Since 1976, she has worked in various capacities at the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Nursing. Currently, Dr. Albrecht also works as a substitute school nurse, a volunteer crisis intervention counselor for Pittsburgh Action Against Rape, a Family Nurse Practitioner in the Student Health Services at the University of Pittsburgh, and a nurse practitioner in an emergency department. She is also Director of the PhD Program at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing.


A recognized expert in substance use and smoking cessation during pregnancy, her research has been funded many times and her work published in numerous books and journals. She actively provides smoking cessation counseling and serves as an expert source for media in the topic area. Dr. Albrecht’s focus on prevention of post-partum smoking relapse is shown through strategies such as the use of yoga and cognitive behavioral therapy to assist patients. Additionally, she has presented on implementing and facilitating expert “Screening, Brief Intervention & Referral to Treatment (SBIRT)” training to health professionals.

A long-time AWHONN member, Dr. Albrecht has held numerous leadership positons with the organization since joining in 1996. She has served as chair of the research committee, a member of the nominating committee and its chair, member of the public policy committee, and co-chair of the 2005 Childbearing and Newborn Advisory Panel. Additionally, she has served on the national Board of Directors and was president of the organization in 2010.

Dr. Albrecht earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing, Master’s in Nursing, and PhD from the University of Pittsburgh. She has also earned a Master’s of Project Management from Carnegie Mellon University and attended the Ohio State University to become a credentialed family nurse practitioner.
