Massachusetts Nurse Receives National Association’s Excellence Award

Dr. Joyce Edmonds Accepts AWHONN Award for Education

Washington, DC, June 15, 2015 – The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) presented its 2015 Award of Excellence in Education to Joyce K. Edmonds, PhD, MPH, RN for her commitment to educating student nurses. The award was presented at the AWHONN national Convention in Long Beach, California.

AWHONN presents its Award of Excellence in Education each year to an AWHONN member with an outstanding history of educating colleagues, patients and others. Winners have made contributions to the knowledge base of women’s or newborn health.

Dr. Edmonds is an Assistant Professor at Boston College’s School of Nursing and teaches in both undergraduate and graduate programs. Dr. Edmonds has lived all over the country and internationally. She draws on these experiences and her impressive public health background to provide nursing students with a perspective that considers a patients’ community, cultural, social, and economic background as important elements in their health. Her research interests are in maternal health, health seeking behavior, and health disparities with a current emphasis on the influence of nursing in the safe prevention of low-risk cesarean delivery.

“Dr. Edmonds’ dedication to providing high quality, public health minded education to current and future nurses is laudable,” said AWHONN’s Chief Executive Officer Lynn Erdman, MN, RN, FAAN. “Her global perspective teaches nurses the importance of understanding the many different factors that influence an individual’s utilization of women’s health and obstetric services.”

Dr. Edmonds has more than 15 years of experience in maternal and public health nursing. She earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from Florida State University, a Master’s in Public Health from Oregon Health Sciences University, and a PhD from Emory University. She presents her work at numerous conferences, including most recently at the American Public Health Association’s Annual Meeting Proceedings on the Nurse Family Partnership Project. Dr. Edmonds is an active member of AWHONN, the Massachusetts Public Health Nursing Association, and the JOGNN Editorial Board Member.
