University of Massachusetts Professor Receives National Association’s Excellence Award

Dr. Heidi Collins Fantasia Accepts AWHONN Award for Research

Washington, DC, June 15, 2015- The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) presented its 2015 Award of Excellence in Research to Heidi Collins Fantasia, PhD, RN, WHNP-BC, for her excellence in nursing research and continued innovation in the delivery of care for women and their families. The award was presented at the AWHONN national Convention in Long Beach, California.

AWHONN presents its Award of Excellence in Research each year to an AWHONN member who demonstrates a history of conducting grant-funded research, publishes research in peer-reviewed journals, reflects AWHONN goals and standards in their contributions to research, and demonstrates clinical applications of research.

Dr. Fantasia is an assistant professor in the College of Health Sciences, School of Nursing at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell. Her ongoing research includes better understanding the intersection between violence and women’s reproductive health. In her work as a clinician, researcher, student mentor, and educator, Dr. Fantasia examines contraceptive use patterns among women exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV), the effects of violence on sexual risk behaviors, sexual consent negotiation, reproductive coercion and screening for IPV in college health centers. Her dedicated research and work also extends to educating and serving a very diverse and marginalized population at a non-profit family health clinic. She is also involved in examining facilitators and barriers to HPV vaccination.

“Dr. Fantasia’s research into the correlation between reproductive wellness and the health of relationships is groundbreaking,” said AWHONN’s Chief Executive Officer, Lynn Erdman, MN, RN, FAAN. “Through her mentorship and research, young women will be informed of available family planning resources and nurses will gain the tools they need to assist patients whose reproductive health may be affected by intimate partner violence.”

Dr. Fantasia directly demonstrates her commitment to ongoing scholarship and women’s health through her program of research and having produced an impressive 50 peer-reviewed scholarly publications. She is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for Nursing for Women’s Health, a column editor for Nursing for Women’s Health, a two-time guest editor for the In Focus Series for the Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic, and Neonatal Nursing, and a member of AWHONN’s Research Advisory Panel.

Dr. Fantasia earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from Salem State College and her master’s and doctoral degrees from Boston College, where she also completed a postdoctoral fellowship.
