Georgia Nurse Awarded National Nursing Association’s Highest Honor

Carol J. Harvey Receives the 2016 Distinguished Professional Service Award

Washington, DC, June 13, 2016 – The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) presented its highest honor, the Distinguished Professional Service Award, to Carol J. Harvey, MS, BSN, RNC-OB, C-EFM, for her contributions to the field of women’s health and newborn care.  The award was presented at the AWHONN national Convention in Grapevine, Texas and is sponsored by the JOHNSON’S® Brand.

Ms. Harvey is a Clinical Nurse Specialist at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, one of the highest volume birth centers in the United States.  A recognized expert in fetal heart monitoring and high risk and critical care obstetrics, Ms. Harvey served as the nurse representative to National Institute of Child Health and Development’s committee to establish standard fetal heart monitoring terminology. She is an author of numerous publications, has led clinical outcomes research, and has been involved in the development of new products for fetal surveillance and maternal hemorrhage.

“Carol Harvey’s commitment to improving the health of women and newborns through education and clinical practice has impacted the lives of countless individuals,” said AWHONN’s Chief Executive Officer Lynn Erdman, MN, RN, FAAN. “Her exemplary dedication to the nursing profession and knowledge of fetal heart monitoring and high risk and critical care obstetrics make her a clear choice for AWHONN’s 2016 Distinguished Professional Service Award.”

A long-time AWHONN member, Ms. Harvey has held numerous leadership positions with the organization since joining in 1993, including Instructor Trainer for AWHONN’s Fetal Heart Monitoring program and Chair of the AWHONN Committee on Practice.  Ms. Harvey earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from the University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences and a Master of Science in Maternal-Fetal Nursing from the University of Colorado.

“At JOHNSON'S, we know that nursing leadership is essential to delivering what is best for mom and baby," said David A. Mays, Senior Director of Scientific Engagement for Johnson & Johnson Consumer Companies, Inc. “As such, JOHNSON'S is committed to supporting nurses worldwide and is proud to support the 2016 Distinguished Professional Service Award.”
