California Nurse Receives National Nursing Association’s Excellence Award

Julie Arafeh Accepts AWHONN Award for Education

Washington, DC, June 13, 2016 – The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) today presented its 2016 Award of Excellence in Education to Julie Arafeh, MSN, RN, for her 30 year career of educating nurses and other obstetric clinicians. The award was presented at the AWHONN national Convention in Grapevine, Texas.

Each year, AWHONN presents its Award of Excellence in Education to an AWHONN member with an outstanding history of educating colleagues, patients, and others.  Winners have made contributions to the knowledge base of women’s or newborns’ health.

Ms. Arafeh is a senior simulation specialist at the Center for Advanced Pediatric and Perinatal Education at Stanford University. In that capacity, she works with a multidisciplinary team to create simulation drills that enhance the capacity of nurses and other obstetric clinicians to provide high-quality care.  She has also served as a simulation expert for the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative’s hemorrhage project.

“Ms. Arafeh’s ability to translate complex clinical topics into practical knowledge for those who read her publications or attend her presentations is outstanding,” said AWHONN’s Chief Executive Officer, Lynn Erdman, MN, RN, FAAN. “Her work as an educator has touched the lives of countless nurses and families.”

A long time AWHONN member, Ms. Arafeh is an invited speaker at international and national conferences.  She has authored book chapters for a number of texts including AWHONN’s, “High Risk and Critical Care Obstetrics.” Additionally, she is widely published in the areas of sepsis, cardiac disease in pregnancy, simulation based training, and maternal cardiac arrest.  Ms. Arafeh was one of the authors on the first American Heart Association Scientific Statement on maternal cardiac arrest.

Ms. Arafeh earned her Bachelor’s in Nursing Science from the University of Evansville in Indiana and her Master’s in Perinatal Nursing from Indiana University in Indianapolis.
