Diaper Drive Teams with Cobb County, Georgia to Meet the Needs of 1 in 3 Local Families

Through their national Healthy Mom&Baby Diaper Drive, the nurses of the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) are teaming up with Cobb County Diaper Day to collect diapers for low-income families through the month of October.

One in three families in the United States is affected by diaper need, or not having enough diapers to keep their babies clean, dry and healthy. This growing problem puts more than 5.3 million children living in low-income families at risk for serious rash or infection when families reuse diapers.  Nurses have long been working to address this critical health issue.

There is no federal safety net like WIC or SNAP for diapers. Families must rely on the generosity of non-profit diaper banks, among others. Yet there’s hope: for as long as nurses have been caring for babies they have been collecting and giving diapers to families in need.

The Cobb County Diaper Day is its 8th year and is a community-wide collection. This year’s event is as follows:

·         October 24th, 2016 at 5:00pm in Glover Park on the Marietta Square

·         Collection points available on all 4 corners of the square

·         Please bring diapers and wipes to benefit five local Cobb County non-profits:

o   Center for Family Resources

o   MUST Ministries

o   Sweetwater Mission

o   United Military Care

o   YWCA of NW Georgia

Annually, this drive collects 60,000 to 95,000 diapers. The goal for this year is to collect 100,000 diapers.

In the northwest suburbs of Atlanta, students at Kennesaw State University (KSU), WellStar School of Nursing are preparing for the Cobb County Diaper Day. The nursing student body, Student Nurses Association, and nursing faculty have joined in these efforts with a diaper challenge to see which group can collect the most diapers.  Students have volunteered to dress in their KSU nursing uniforms to collect donations and help count and sort diapers during the actual drive on the Square.

One nursing student said, “I love being involved in this diaper drive because I want to be a labor and delivery nurse.  Caring for families in need is one way to become a nurse advocate and this ties in well with what we are learning in class and what we are doing in the actual clinical setting.”
