University of Alabama Professor Receives National Nursing Association’s Excellence Award

Dr. Ann Bianchi Accepts AWHONN Award for Research

The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) today presented its 2017 Award of Excellence in Research to Ann Bianchi, PhD, RN, for her excellence in nursing research and continued innovation in the delivery of care for women and their families. The award was presented at the AWHONN national Convention in New Orleans, LA.

Each year, AWHONN presents its Award of Excellence in Research to an AWHONN member who demonstrates a history of conducting grant funded research, publishes research in peer-reviewed journals, reflects AWHONN goals and standards in their contributions to research, and demonstrates clinical applications of research.

Dr. Ann Bianchi is an Associate Professor at The University of Alabama in Huntsville, College of Nursing. She is also the Director of the Nursing Honors Program.  Her ongoing research focuses on intimate partner violence to include abuse during pregnancy and postpartum, intimate partner violence screening practices of maternity nurses, and effectiveness of departure plans for abused women following a community shelter stay.

“Dr. Bianchi’s research into the correlation between intimate partner abuse and its effects during pregnancy and postpartum is critical,” said AWHONN’s Chief Executive Officer, Lynn Erdman, MN, RN, FAAN. “Through her mentorship and research, we can improve the health outcomes of abused women by bringing together community leaders, policy makers, and the next generation of nurse researchers to provide new evidence to establish best practices for supporting the needs of women abuse during pregnancy

She has received external and internal funding to support her research efforts that serve to increase the safety and well-being of abused women and their newborns. Dr. Bianchi's research has been published in a variety of referred journals. She has also disseminated her research by conducting podium and posters presentations at the local, state, and national level.

Dr. Bianchi earned her BSN from George Mason University, her MSN from The University of Alabama in Huntsville, and her PhD from Texas Women’s University, Houston.
