Michigan Nurse Receives National Nursing Association’s Excellence Award

Diane Dengate Accepts AWHONN Award for Bedside Practice

The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) today presented its 2017 Award of Excellence in Bedside Practice to Diane Dengate, BSN, RNC-OB, C-EFM, for her near 40-year nursing career as a labor and delivery nurse. The award was presented at the AWHONN national Convention in New Orleans, LA.

This year, AWHONN presents its first Award of Excellence in Bedside Practice to an AWHONN member with advance clinical excellence of professional nursing in a clinical or community setting which serves a women’s health, obstetric or newborn population.  Winners have utilized a multidisciplinary approach, lead and champion change, quality improvement, and implement evidence based practice in a clinical or community setting.

Ms. Dengage is a Charge and Staff Nurse at Hutzel Hospital in Detroit, a Clinical OB Instructor at Schoolcraft College, and an AWHONN Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) Instructor. Since 2014 she has taught EFM’s Intermediate class more than15 times. With AWHONN she instituted Power Chart maternity and her role as AWHONN instructor eased the transition from paper to computer charting. She noticed people became interested in earning their own certification, so she organized a conference to facilitate that, and worked with NCC to offer the testing on site. As a result, there are now 66 new certified nurses, a group of nurses who feel that they are using evidenced based practice that is current and improves patient care.

“Ms. Dengate is a woman on a mission. She has led remarkable efforts to educate our nurses about electronic fetal monitoring” said AWHONN’s Chief Executive Officer, Lynn Erdman, MN, RN, FAAN. “Her contributions have empowered nursing professionals to use what they had learned and improve patient care.”

Ms. Dengate earned her Bachelor’s in Nursing Science from Nazareth College in Kalamazoo, WI. She is a Certified in Inpatient Obstetric Nursing and Credentialed in Electronic Fetal Monitoring
