Become an Intermediate Instructor

To be an Instructor, you must:

  • Pass the Instructor Course.
  • Secure a favorable evaluation for the first course you lead by a FHMP Instructor Trainer or Designated Instructor.

Become an Advanced Instructor

Some Intermediate Course Instructors may choose to become Advanced Course Instructors as well.

Instructor Candidates & Evaluations

Participants who successfully complete the Instructor Course are considered "Instructor Candidates" until evaluated by an instructor trainer or other designated instructor.

A Designated Instructor is one who has taught at least 3 courses, maintains a 3.5 overall average on course evaluations, and obtains prior approval from AWHONN headquarters.

Evaluations occur during the first course taught by a Instructor Candidate. The Instructor Candidate is responsible to arrange the evaluation. The evaluator can serve as an additional instructor for the course.

Maintain Instructor Status

Minimum requirements to maintain instructor status include:

  • Maintain AWHONN membership.
  • Teach a minimum of 2 courses over 2 years.
  • Maintain a score of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale, calculated from participant evaluations, in each course. This excludes the first time a course is presented under the supervision of an approved instructor.
  • Teach in accordance with the policies and procedures governing the Intermediate Course, as described in the "Instructor Guide" and the Beat Goes On newsletter. Instructors are responsible for presentation quality.
  • Read requirements to maintain Advanced Instructor Status
