Obstetric Patient Safety Education Program

The AWHONN Obstetric Patient Safety Education Program is a pilot program designed to train instructors on the most up-to-date, evidence-based skills that will promote patient safety.  AWHONN Obstetric Patient Safety Instructors will be hosting educational sessions in their local areas.  The focus of the initial instructor training is on helping clinicians implement the national consensus postpartum hemorrhage safety bundle.


Course Overview

Scheduled to launch by Spring 2017, the Postpartum Hemorrhage Obstetric Patient Safety (PPH OPS) course provides participants with education on best practices and key clinical behaviors known to effectively manage postpartum hemorrhage. Tools such as the PPH risk assessment, Quantification of Blood Loss (QBL) Process Map, Debriefing Form, PPH Management Algorithm, Oxytocin and QBL Practice Briefs, and other resources are a part of the course.  Participants will apply PPH knowledge by engaging in simulation skill stations with focus on the following:

  • PPH Risk assessment
  • Quantification of Blood Loss (QBL)
  • Stages of PPH
  • Maternal warning signs
  • Uterine balloon tamponade
  • B-Lynch sutures
  • Conducting a postpartum hemorrhage mega code that includes debriefing

Course Goal

Improve obstetric clinician’s recognition of, readiness for, response to, and reporting of postpartum hemorrhage to provide greater access for women to receive early, effective, and aggressive lifesaving treatments for this obstetric emergency.


Application Requirements

  • Must be an AWHONN member
  • Must have expertise in PPH risk assessment, quantification of blood loss, and debriefing techniques
  • Must complete the AWHONN Postpartum Hemorrhage Online education course.  The course can be accessed here.  To find the PPH online course, click on “Catalog” and then press the “Refine Search” button.  Search for “PPH”.  Select the Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH) Education module. *Please make sure to download your certificate, as you will need it to complete your application.

  • Must attend an onsite training course in Washington, DC on December 8-9, 2016.  The training course will be paid for by AWHONN; however, the travel and hotel must be paid for by the instructor candidate.

If accepted as an applicant, the pilot program instructors have the following requirements:

  • Ensure participants have completed the online AWHONN PPH Education Modules prior to attending
  • Maintain competency in PPH and other program requirements
  • Host  two Obstetric Patient Safety Instructor Programs per year
