Barbara Tewell has been a nurse for almost 47 years. After graduating with a Diploma in Nursing, she has almost always worked in some aspect of Maternal Infant nursing. She is currently employed as a staff and charge nurse on the Mother Infant unit at the Naval Medical Center San Diego. She has worked in L&D, Nursery, Postpartum and Antepartum over the years. She also loves to teach and has been a clinical faculty for several schools of Nursing in San Diego since obtaining her Master of Nursing in Education 2005. She has always been committed to being a patient advocate and providing evidence based care to improve outcomes for Moms and babies.
She is dedicated to AWHONN, being a long standing member and frequent participate on both local and national committees. She encourages all students and co-workers to join professional organizations. She has mentored new employees, students and even residents during her career. She has taught BLS, NRP and various other programs such as POEP and fetal monitoring. Through AWHONN she has had the honor of being on the nominating committee, host committee, program committee and Chair of the CA Section. She has served as a member of the CA Preconception Health Council which works to improve outcomes by promoting a state of wellness both mentally and physically before undergoing a pregnancy. She has always believed in the role of the bedside nurse and the wonderful knowledge and networking that one gets through AWHONN.
