2016 Legislative Agenda

Posted By Betty Lou Haywood, Monday, January 25, 2016
Dear Chapter Chairs,
Please share these national legislative updates from Kerri Wade with your members. I’m enclosing the late 2015 legislative report and the 2016 Legislative Agenda (see attachment).
Have a wonderful 2016!
Sybil Momii, MSN, RNC-OB
Texas AWHONN Legislative Representative

1.)AWHONN-Supported NAS Legislation Signed into Law!
TheProtecting our Infants Act, a bipartisan bill for which AWHONN is a long-time supporter <> , was signed into law by President Obama on November 25. Many of you made visits, called, and wrote to your Members of Congress and their staff in support of this legislation.Thank you for your outstanding advocacy efforts.
2.) AWHONN Supports Perinatal Mood Disorders Legislation

Last month, AWHONN formally endorsed <>TheBringing Postpartum Depression Out of the Shadows Act.This bipartisan bill would make grants available to states to establish, expand or maintain culturally competent programs for screening and treatment of women who are pregnant, or who have given birth within the preceding 12 months, for maternal depression.

3.)Breastfeeding Legislation Introduced
On November 20, theSupporting Working Moms Actwas introduced in both houses of Congress. This bipartisan legislation would expand working moms' right to breastfeed by ensuring that salaried employees have break time and a private place to pump in the workplace.Current federal law provides similar protections for hourly wage earners.
The U.S. Breastfeeding Committee, of which AWHONN is a member, has provided tools for supporting this legislation. Get involved by:
üWriting to your Members of Congress <>and ask that they support ALL working moms.
üTweeting about it.Some samples are below.
o60% don't reach their own #breastfeeding goal, but laws that guarantee #BFing breaks at work can help change this #SWMA
oSupporting Working Moms Act is good for families, employers, & economy: where do your legislators stand? #SWMA
oSupporting Working Moms Act would make #breastfeeding possible for an additional 13.5 million #WorkingMoms #SWMA
oBig #SWMA TY 2 @SenJeffMerkley @RepMaloney @RonWyden @lisamurkowski @SenSchumer @SenMarkey @SenGillibrand @SenWarren @alfranken @RepMaloney

4.)2016 Legislative Agenda
Attached, please find a sneak preview of AWHONN’s 2016 Legislative & Policy Agenda. It was approved by the AWHONN Board of Directors at their meeting earlier this month and includes two new areas of interest for our advocacy efforts: 1.) support for paid family leave, and 2.) a better understanding of the use of prescription drugs in pregnant and lactating women.Expect to see more information related to these issues in the year to come.
Thanks for all that you do.
