Another nurse, Jessica Histo, of Honolulu, HI has not only raised awareness of diaper need and diapers for the families of Hawaii, but she also recently co-founded Hawaii's very first diaper bank, "Hawai'i Diaper Bank started when I was looking for somewhere to donate the diapers my son had outgrown. Drives were held during National Diaper Need Awareness Week in 2016 and 2017, at that time Hawaii was one of the 3 states with no diaper banks. We are truly blessed to have a small but amazing group of people that continue support us; and in 2018 we not only received or articles of incorporation, but also a mayoral proclamation for National Diaper Need Awareness Week. The Keiki (children) of Hawai'i are what drives the work we do, no child should have to go without this basic need."- Jessica Histo, Honolulu, HI

AWHONN GA has participated in the Healthy Mom&Baby Diaper Drive for the past three years, and has raised over 150,000 diapers to date. Cathy Jones and her leadership team raised over 10,000 diapers this past month, "I asked myself how I would feel if I couldn't put a dry, clean diaper on my baby despite his cries and it brought me to tears. we often hear about sad circumstances and engage in conversation about how something has to change, but we have to be part of the change." - Cathy Jones, Atlanta, GA

Deb Roache has participated in the diaper drive since 2015, and together with her facility has raised close to 21,000. "The thought of the effect on these babies and their parents is heartbreaking. Babies are at risk of infection and skin breakdown when they do not have enough diapers to be changed frequently. Parents that cannot provide disposable diapers may not be able to work as most day cares require their provision. Imagine how the parents must feel when they are unable to provide their children's most basic needs!"- Deb Roache, Chicago, IL

In honor of #diaperneedawarenessweek today’s post features AWHONN member Joan Sperger, who works to raise awareness in her own community as well at the National Diaper Lobby in Washington, D.C. “As a mother baby nurse, I see patients from all walks of life. We realize that some of our less fortunate moms are asking us for more diapers when we know they have probably not used all the diapers we have already provided. We do give them more diapers when they ask, knowing that they have insecurity about their ability to care for the babies. I believe that no mother should worry about supplying the basic needs for her child, just because she is getting public assistance or food stamps. I believe it’s an abomination that this country of plenty does not take care of their children. Diapers are not a choice, they are a necessity.” #nurses4diaperneed

September Diaper Drive Update

Posted By Jessica K. Hazboun, Monday, September 10, 2018

Happy Monday!

Just a few things I wanted to share with everyone:

  1. The Chapter Challenge that ends on the last day of National Diaper Need Awareness Week, September 24th-30th. If you have hosted a diaper drive any time this past year, remember to record your drive on diaperdrive.org. Any diapers raised will be added to your chapter tally. The chapter/section that has raised the most diapers will win the GRAND PRIZE of an AWHONN hosted Pizza Party + Goodie Box filled with pins, totes, and lanyards for the ENTIRE chapter.
  2. There is no “right” way to hold a diaper drive, as long as you are helping to raise awareness of the severity of diaper need. Your drives can be held at your local church, your next meeting, your hospital, a facility, or anywhere in your community and the diapers raised can be donated to ANY community organization that is able to distribute diapers to those with diaper need.

I have FULL confidence that we can make the difference that we as professionals nurses are SO capable of. Contact me at jhazboun@awhonn.org today!
