AWHONN June 2016 Legislative Update

Dear Legislative Coordinators,
This month, our advocacy efforts are aimed at support for the military, their families, and our nation’s veterans.  Consider engaging your Section on these important issues. As always, if you have any questions or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact Sybil Momii, Texas Legislative Representative, email:
1.)   Support Full Practice Authority for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses
The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) operates more than 1,700 sites and provides care to 8.76 million veterans annually. The VHA is currently considering a policy that would allow Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) working in the VHA to practice to the full extent of their education and training. The publication of this policy has been a highly visible process, with an aggressive response from organized medicine <> , particularly the American Society of Anesthesiologists <> , and significant press coverage <> .

AWHONN has long supported full practice authority <>  for APRNs in the VHA system.  Now you have a chance to weigh in, too!  A pre-written letter in support of this change is available on the ANA website <> . All comments are due by July 25, 2016. For more information, visit the VHA website. <>

2.)   Support Paid Leave for Members of the Military
The Military Parental Leave Modernization Act would provide service members – regardless of gender – at least 12 weeks of paid leave to care for a new child. The legislation would eliminate policies that provide unequal leave to adoptive and foster parents. Visit the website <>  of the U.S. Breastfeeding Committee, of which AWHONN is a member, to learn more about this legislation. From there, you can write a letter to your Members of Congress in support of the Military Parental Leave Modernization Act.

AWHONN Joins a New Advocacy  Coalition
AWHONN recently joined the Veterans Access to Care coalition.  Made up of professional nursing organizations, the purpose of the coalition is to promote the access to care Veterans need and deserve. Visit the coalition’s website <> to learn more about these issues and to engage with policy makers.
