AWHONN Nutrition Educational Grant for Sections and Chapters
Share |

Abbott Nutrition has generously provided a $12,000 grant to support AWHONN Section and Chapter educational initiatives, with an intentional focus on breastfeeding and newborn nutrition education. AWHONN will award $2,000 to six (6) AWHONN Sections/Chapters in 2018. The grant must be used for an educational session between July 1, 2018 and October 31, 2018. Applications due Tuesday, May 25, 2018

The criteria for Section and Chapters to receive an educational grant are as follows:

  • Full-Term Newborn Nutrition

o   Emerging science in infant nutrition related to immunity (Human Mild Oligosaccharides [HMOs])

o   Feeding Intolerance

- Etiology (food allergy, cow’s milk protein allergy, protein sensitivity, condition specific        [eg, NAS])

-Feeding Strategies – breastfeeding, donor milk, feeding cues, protocols and feeding devices, protocols/guidelines, Continuum of Care (Hospital to home discharge)

  •  Preterm Newborn Nutrition

o   Human milk fortification and human milk composition

o   Tailored solutions for meeting preterm infants’ protein needs

o   Preterm Malnutrition and at risk for malnutrition  (in hospital and post-discharge)

-       Nutrition of the premature/late preterm infant (in hospital and post-discharge)

  • The program’s content should attract a diverse patient care population, such as rural health, etc.

Application Process:

  • Applicants must submit an agenda, budget, learning objectives and a description of infant nutrition learning need as part of their application. Applicants from rural and low-resource areas are strongly encouraged to apply. Applications will be judged on clarity of learning objectives and the urgency of infant nutrition learning needs.
  • Funds should be used to directly offset the conference, and may include speaker costs (honoraria, travel/lodging), materials, food/beverage for meals surrounding presentation
  • If applying at the Chapter level, the Section Chair would need to approve
  • The program must offer continuing nursing education (CNE) credit.

Grant funds cannot be used to:

  • Fund social activities outside of the educational conference.
  • Raise general funds for the Section or Chapter.
  • Offset expenditures for meetings that have already taken place.
  • Promotional items/give-a-ways

Selection Process:

Should grant requests surpass the total amount of funds available; grantees will be chosen on the basis of the program’s potential impact on nutrition and child health, whether other outside funding is available, and the internal consistency between the program proposal and the submitted budget.

If selected to receive an educational grant, grantees must acknowledge Abbott Nutrition on conference signage, brochures, and other meeting materials. We suggest the following language; “This event is made possible in part by an AWHONN educational grant supported by Abbott Nutrition.” Grantees must also submit a report within 30 days following the event, which explains the way the grant was used. The update should include the following:

  • Section/Chapter name
  • Direct Program Expenses
  • Amount Awarded
  • CNE Event Name and Date
  • Description of how the funds were used and evaluation/outcomes data
  • Nutrition topic(s) covered
  • Attendance breakdown by clinical specialty area

Please note:  Proposals sent in without a budget and draft agenda will not be considered.
