Tennessee Nurse Receives National Nursing Association’s Excellence Award

Dr. Suzanne Baird Accepts AWHONN Award for Clinical Education

The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) today presented its 2017 Award of Excellence in Clinical Education to Suzanne Baird, DNP, RN for her 34 year career of educating nurses and other obstetric clinicians. The award was presented at the AWHONN national Convention in New Orleans, LA.

Each year, AWHONN presents its Award of Excellence in Education to an AWHONN member with an outstanding history of educating colleagues, patients, and others.  This year we are recognizing AWHONN Members who have made strides in clinical education. Winners have made contributions to the knowledge base of women’s or newborns’ health.

Dr. Baird is an Adjunct Professor in Nursing at Vanderbilt University, President and Founder of Clinical Concepts in Obstetrics, Inc., and a Labor and Delivery nurse at Vanderbilt University.

Educating nurses and other providers in care of the pregnant woman has been the focus of her career. She has served as preceptor to new nurses in Labor and Delivery, provided clinical instruction for nursing students, lectured in nursing school classrooms, planned and implemented hospital education, simulated obstetric emergency clinical scenarios, and developed formal conference materials.

“Dr. Baird’s ability to translate complex clinical topics into practical knowledge for those who read her publications, go to her class, or attend her presentations is outstanding,” said AWHONN’s Chief Executive Officer, Lynn Erdman, MN, RN, FAAN. “Her work as an educator has touched the lives of countless nurses and families.”

A long time AWHONN member, Dr. Baird is an invited speaker at international and national conferences.  She will also be serving as an author and editor for the next edition of AWHONN’s “High Risk and Critical Care Obstetrics”, fourth edition textbook. Additionally, she has written and published numerous peer reviewed journal articles, book chapters, electronic learning modules, and edit a textbook.

Dr. Baird earned her Bachelor’s in Nursing Science from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, her Masters of Science in Nursing Critical Care Obstetrics from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, and her Doctoral of Nursing Practice from Rush University in Chicago.
