Boston Nurse Receives National Nursing Association’s Research Award

Dr. Dieujuste Accepts AWHONN’s Every Woman, Every Baby and

The Tara Hansen Foundation Award

The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) today presented its 2017 Every Woman, Every Baby to Colette Dieujuste RN, MS for her research entitled, “Lived Experience of Haitian Immigrant Women with Postpartum Depression.”  The award was presented at the AWHONN national Convention in New Orleans, LA.

AWHONN’s Every Woman, Every Baby and the Tara Hansen Foundation Award is granted to a researcher whose proposal investigates variables relevant to women’s health, obstetric and neonatal nursing. It is jointly supported through AWHONN’s Every Woman, Every Baby charitable giving program and the Tara Hansen Foundation.  This is the second year the award has been presented by AWHONN.

Dr. Dieujuste is an instructor at the Simmons College School of Nursing and Health Sciences in Boston, Massachusetts where she has been teaching since 2000. Her larger program of research has focused on accumulating information on Haitian women to see if they are at high risk for postpartum depression.

"Dr. Dieujuste research is important to identifying if Haitian women have a high risk of being diagnosed with postpartum depression as there has been no study prior to her research” said AWHONN's Chief Executive Officer, Lynn Erdman, MN, RN, FAAN.  "Her work will help identify cues that can be used to decrease the prevalence of postpartum depression among this group of women.”

A long-time AWHONN member, Dr. Dieujuste earned her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from Columbia School of Science; a Master’s of Science in Perinatal Nursing from Boston College; and a Doctorate of Nursing at University of Massachusetts Medical School.  She has given related presentations throughout the United States and has written publications.

About the Tara Hansen Foundation

The Tara Hansen Foundation was established in 2012 to honor the life and memory of Tara Hansen, a special education teacher at the West Freehold School in Freehold, NJ., who passed away on March 31, 2011, due to complications from childbirth. Six days earlier, she had given birth to her first child, Brandon Ryan. The foundation is dedicated to the advancement of maternal health awareness and believes expecting parents deserve equal education on the risks associated with the mother as well as the child.
