Massachusetts Nurse Receives National Nursing Association’s Excellence Award

Dr. Holly Fontenot Accepts AWHONN Award for Scholarly Education

The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) today presented its 2017 Award of Excellence in Scholarly Education to Holly B. Fontenot, PhD, RN, WHNP-BC., for her 19 year career of educating women’s health nurses. The award was presented at the AWHONN national Convention in New Orleans, LA.

Each year, AWHONN presents its Award of Excellence in Education to an AWHONN member with an outstanding history of educating colleagues, patients, and others.  This year we are recognizing AWHONN Members who have made strides in scholarly education. Winners have made contributions to the knowledge base of women’s or newborns’ health.

Dr. Fontenot is an Assistant Professor in Nursing at Boston College and a Clinician Consultant in Boston, MA.  She has directly educated, mentored, and fostered the careers of over 300 Women’s Health Nurse Practitioners.  Dr. Fontenot has helped to develop a mentored research network for AWHONN’s Massachusetts chapter members designed to increase evidence based and translational research practice, increase skills related to research critique, and increase national and local poster and oral presentations highlighting AWHONN nurse’s work.

“Dr. Fontenot’s contributions to women’s health education have touched the lives of countless AWHONN nurses and women’s health nurses on an international level” said AWHONN’s Chief Executive Officer, Lynn Erdman, MN, RN, FAAN. “She has done outstanding work translating complex topics into practical knowledge for those who read her publications, go to her class, or attend her presentations.

A long time AWHONN member, Dr. Fontenot Baird is an invited speaker at international and national conferences. Dr. Fontenot has mentored many nurses to write for AWHONN journals, have been a member of the editorial advisory board for Nursing for Women’s Health, guest edited JOGNN’s “In Focus” series, and been a member and co-chair of the Research Advisory Panel. She has also contributed to educating nurses through my personal scholarship, authoring over 40 publications

Dr. Fontenot earned her Bachelor’s in Nursing Science from Georgia Baptist College of Nursing at Mercer University in Atlanta, her Masters of Science in Nursing as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner from Boston College, and Doctorate in Nursing Science from Boston College.
