Wisconsin Nurse Receives National Nursing Association’s Excellence Award

Dr. Rana Limbo Accepts AWHONN Award for Leadership

The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) today presented its 2017 Award of Excellence in Leadership to Rana Limbo, PhD, RN, CPLC, FAAN, for her near 50-year nursing career for her internationally renowned perinatal bereavement program, Resolve Through Sharing. The award was presented at the AWHONN national Convention in New Orleans, LA.

This year, AWHONN presents its first Award of Excellence in Leadership to an AWHONN member with an outstanding history of individual contribution to promote the profession of women’s or newborn’s health nursing within a system, culture, or division.   Winners have made individual contribution to promote women’s or newborn’s health nursing on the local, state, or federal political arenas beyond employment requirements.

Dr. Limbo is a Senior Faculty Consultant and Associate Director at Gundersen Medical Foundation, Resolve Through Sharing® Bereavement Services. Her care of patients sparked her interest in accepting the coordinator position for creating a formal perinatal bereavement program for professionals. This endeavor was enthusiastically received by1983 national NAACOG meeting participants and has trained 50,000 since its inception. Dr. Limbo subsequently established a track record of careful scholarship centered on relationship-based care. Relationship has been the focus of her leadership, as she mentors and guides professionals who often began their bedside care for bereaved families lacking confidence.

“Dr. Limbo has led remarkable efforts to promote the relationship development between bereaved parents and those caring for them” said AWHONN’s Chief Executive Officer, Lynn Erdman, MN, RN, FAAN. “Her contributions have led healthcare professionals in developing their own expertise, reflection, and critical thinking on relationship-based care. This  important work will help improve the quality of care we provide to every family. “

A long time AWHONN member, Dr. Rana Limbo is an invited speaker at international and national conferences. Dr. Limbo is also the President of Pregnancy Loss and Infant Death Alliance (PLIDA) for the past 4 years. During that time she has worked to develop PLIDA members and board members into leaders themselves by encouraging high quality educational opportunities for their biennial conference and by working with committee chairs—listening to their concerns, and exploring problem-solving

Dr. Limbo earned her Bachelor’s in Nursing Science from St. Olaf College in Minnesota, her Masters of Science in Maternal Child Nursing from the University of Colorado, her Masters of Science in Adult Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing from Indiana University, and Doctorate in Nursing from the University of Wisconsin.
