Massachusetts Nurse Receives Writing Award from Clinical Nursing Journal

Marissa Tenenbaum Potter Accepts the Nursing for Women’s Health Excellence in Writing Award

WASHINGTON, D.C., July 9, 2018– Nursing for Women’s Health, the official clinical practice journal of the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), presented its annual Excellence in Writing award to Marissa Tenenbaum Potter, BA, RN, CCE, for her article titled, “Nurse-Led Initiatives to Implement Universal Screening for Perinatal Emotional Complications.” The award was presented at the AWHONN National Convention in Tampa, Florida.

The Nursing for Women’s Health Excellence in Writing award honors the author of an original article published in Nursing for Women’s Health. Criteria for the award include the timeliness and relevancy of the topic; the readability and practicality of the article; and the potential of the article to meet the mission of the journal, which is to improve outcomes for women and newborns through the dissemination of clinical scholarship.

Potter is a registered nurse (RN) at the Baystate Franklin Medical Center Birthplace in Greenfield, MA, where she previously served as a collegiate care technician in obstetrics. Her award-winning Nursing for Women’s Health article is her first publication.

“Emotional complications of pregnancy are all too often ignored by women and care providers, to the detriment of all involved,” said Nursing for Women’s Health Editor Mary C. Brucker, CNM, PhD, FACNM, FAAN. “Universal screening as described by Potter provides an important way for women with these issues to be identified by nurses and then appropriately treated.”

In addition to being an RN, Potter is a certified childbirth educator and doula at Bellyfull Birth in Shelburne Falls, MA. She founded Bellyfull Birth in 2011 to serve women and their growing families through pregnancy, birth, and the early days of parenting with workshops, classes, and consultations. Potter has used her expertise to develop curriculum and teach childbirth education to hundreds of families at local maternity centers.

Potter earned an Associate of Science degree in Nursing from Greenfield Community College in Greenfield, MA. She also attained a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies: Ecology and Sociology from Marlboro College in Marlboro, VT.
