The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) is pleased to announce the addition of DJ Johnson, IOM, CAE to its executive staff leadership team as Vice Membership and Volunteer Development.


A Certified Association Executive (CAE) who has been serving nonprofit associations for seventeen years, Johnson has led membership, volunteer and diversity and inclusion efforts a number of organizations, including the Drug Information Association, the American Association of Diabetes Educators and ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership.

Most recently, he worked for the American Society of Interior Designers where he spearheaded membership operations and strategy as Vice President of Membership and later worked to enhance volunteer development and engagement as the Vice President of Community and Education Engagement.

“I’ve personally seen the care, dedication and best practices DJ has brought to membership and leadership development projects at many organizations,” said AWHONN CEO Suzanne Berry, MBA, CAE. “He has already ‘hit the deck running’ and is looking at ways to add value to our sections, chapters and membership.” 

“As the parent of child born late pre-term, I’ve personally been impacted by the dedicated healthcare professionals in AWHONN’s membership,” said Johnson. “I’m excited to work with the dedicated AWHONN volunteer leadership, members and staff to bolster AWHONN’s membership and volunteer efforts in empowering and supporting nurses caring for women, newborns and their families.”

Johnson has served as a volunteer leader on several industry advisory boards including the ASAE Diversity and Inclusion Committee and is currently a member of the CAE Commission, the governing body over the Certified Association Executive examination and certification. Before joining the Commission, Johnson earned his CAE in 2008. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Institute for Organization Management, a leadership program facilitated by the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation. He is also a Diversity Executive Leadership Scholar and has received numerous awards for his work in associations. Originally a working journalist, Johnson has a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University.
