Alabama Professor Receives National Nursing Research Award

Dr. Ellise Adams Accepts the Hill-Rom/AWHONN Grant

Washington, DC, June 13, 2016 – The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) today presented the Hill-Rom/Celeste Phillips Family-Centered Maternity Care Research Award to Ellise D. Adams, PhD, CNM, for her research entitled, “Suctioning at Birth: A Feasibility Study of the Use of the Blue Bulb Syringe.” The award was presented at AWHONN’s annual Convention in Grapevine, Texas.

This award is supported by Hill-Rom, Inc. and is named for Celeste Phillips, a nurse and internationally recognized leader in family-centered maternity care. Dr. Phillips is passionate about the philosophy that the childbearing process belongs with the family.  She worked extensively to introduce the single room maternity care concept to hospitals and physicians throughout the United States.

“Dr. Adams’ research seeks to improve birth outcomes,” said AWHONN's Chief Executive Officer, Lynn Erdman, MN, RN, FAAN. “We are grateful for Hill-Rom's continued support for this award and are excited to see the potential impact this research has on perinatal nursing practices.”

Dr. Adams is an associate professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.  Her clinical background is as a labor and delivery staff nurse and a perinatal educator in the hospital setting. She earned a PhD in nursing science from Texas Woman’s University; a Master’s degree in nursing science from Case Western Reserve University; a Bachelor’ of Science in Nursing from the University of Alabama in Huntsville; and a nurse-midwifery certification from Frontier University. Her primary research interests include the benefits of skin-to-skin care during cesarean birth, homebirth practices of American women, and the practice of newborn airway clearance.  She is a member of AWHONN’s Research Advisory Panel and the American College of Nurse-Midwives’ Healthy Birth Initiatives Task Force.
