Call for Applications to Serve on AWHONN’s 2020 National Committees

2020 National Committees

 

We are currently seeking new members for AWHONN 2020 National Committees. By serving on a National Committee, members have the opportunity to contribute their knowledge and experience in an area that will be useful in strengthening and expanding AWHONN.

 

Serving on a National Committee is highly rewarding. It’s an opportunity to learn more about AWHONN and gain a better understanding of national issues, nursing opportunities, healthcare changes, and/or policy issues affecting us as an organization. Applications are currently being accepted to serve on the committees listed below now through Friday, November 8, 2019.  Selected members will be notified by early December 2019. 

 

How to Apply

Applicants must fill out one application for each committee they seek for consideration. So if applying to 2 or more committees, please fill out 2 or more individual applications.  Please make sure that you change the responses and information in the essays related to the applied committee.

Finance Committee 

The National Finance Committee supports the Board and Staff primarily by providing financial oversight for the organization.  The Finance Committee’s responsibilities include:

 

  • Review and approval of annual operating budgets for Headquarters and the 51 Sections with the committee monitoring adherence to the budget.
  • Create policies and procedures for financial transactions and other areas of risk (e.g. capital purchases, gift acceptance, etc.).
  • Select an independent auditing firm to audit and express an opinion on the organization’s financial statements.
  • Review the draft audited financial statements and IRS Form 990 report as presented by the auditor for final Board approval.
  • Develop an investment policy detailing the objectives of the investment portfolio and ensuring that the provisions of the policy are followed by the investment/financial advisors which will review and update the policy when necessary in order to present to the Board for final approval.
  • Meet once a year, usually face-to face and occasionally by conference call. 

 

Committee members should have experience with budgeting and financial planning. The Committee comprises the Chair, current Secretary-Treasurer of the Board of Directors and two Board of Directors, two Members At-Large along with the President-Elect (non-voting member) and AWHONN’s CEO (non-voting member).

 

The committee is currently seeking two members from the AWHONN membership.

 

Term: Begins January 1, 2020 and ends December 31, 2021, except President-elect and Secretary-Treasurer. Board members alternate.

Nominating Committee

The National Nominating Committee is responsible for identifying qualified candidates to serve on AWHONN’s Board of Directors. The Committee is vital to the process of vetting, interviewing and selecting candidates for the Board of Directors slate. When applying it is important to know that the nominating committee work is time limited and intense from January to April of each year and therefore requires committed members.

 

The Nominating Committee responsibilities include:

  • Meeting monthly by conference call between January and May in addition to a 2-3 hour call in April

  • Identifying and/or recruiting candidates for office throughout the year - Requires making telephone calls

  • Conducting weekly telephone and/or video interviews with prospective candidates in April and early May – All NC members are required to participate

  • Developing a slate of candidates to recommend to the Board for approval. 

Committee Members should have a wide network of colleagues, be familiar with leadership qualities essential for governing an association and have interviewing experience. The Committee is composed of the immediate Past President (who serves as Chair), eight committee members, and AWHONN’s CEO as a non-voting member. Members of the Committee, excluding the immediate Past President, shall serve a two-year term and shall be ineligible for reappointment for five years following conclusion of his/her term. 

Term: Begins January 1, 2020 and ends December 31, 2021.

Membership Committee

The mission of the Membership Committee is to ensure a growing and vital organization by providing recommendations, policies, procedures, and strategies to help improve membership growth and retention.

 

Note: The 2019 Membership Committee will meet during Convention.

 

The Membership Committee Responsibilities include:

  • Planning and hosting the New Member and First Time Attendee session(s) at the AWHONN Convention. 
  •  Serving as mentors and helping to plan and actively participate in the activities of The Hive at the AWHONN Convention.
  •  Reviewing the Recruitment & Rewards Program, suggesting ideas for improving and expanding the program and increasing member recruitment.
  • Developing new and innovative ways to attract new members as well as retain current membership.
  • Linking AWHONN with the attitudes, expectations, needs, and trends in the real world of our members.
  • Representing, involving, and serving AWHONN members.
  • Providing a forum for issues affecting the membership.

To be eligible to serve on the Membership Committee you must be a Full or Retired member of AWHONN in good standing. Committee members must be willing to commit to attend the AWHONN convention in Atlanta at their own expense. 

 

Term: One year terms that may be renewed for up to 3 years.

Development Committee

The Development Committee helps to raise funds to support AWHONN’s mission of promoting the health of women and newborns by engaging members and others in supporting the Every Woman, Every Baby charitable giving program. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Steward:  Create and implement the strategic plan, set and track goals, develop case for support
  • Donor:  Make an annual gift of significance to AWHONN through a personal contribution
  • Visitor:  Ask peers (AWHONN members to financially support the mission of AWHONN— by making a charitable gift to EWEB)
  • Prospector:  Engage in identification, prospecting and evaluation process of potential donors
  • Advocate:  Serve as charitable giving ambassador for AWHONN; creating a culture of philanthropy for AWHONN members
  • Visible Attendee:  Meet as a committee in person and through conference calls, attend AWHONN events locally and the AWHONN Convention (if possible)
  • Team Builder:  Report to and work with the AWHONN Board of Directors to ensure the success of the committee

Term: Begins January 1, 2020 and ends December 31, 2020.

Public Policy Committee

The Public Policy Committee supports the Board of Directors and Headquarters staff in developing AWHONN’s federal public policy priorities, as well as the action plans behind them.  

 

The Public Policy Committee responsibilities include:

 

  • Taking part in a video conference call once per month.
  • Planning the Legislative Forum at AWHONN’s Annual Convention.
  • Providing short-fused, rapid turnaround response via email for emerging or hot-topic legislative or policy issues.
  • Drafting one opinion editorial per year on a topic of their choice from AWHONN’s current legislative agenda.
  • Reviewing and revising selected position statements.
  • Lending guidance and support to inform public comment on issues related to public policy or governmental affairs.
  • Serve as a sounding board when rapid responses are need to emerging opportunities or challenges that do not require board intervention. 

 

The Committee is composed of one appointed member of the AWHONN Board of Directors, as well as 8-10 additional student or full AWHONN members.  Committee members are eligible to serve two one-year terms and should have experience with legislative, advocacy, or policy issues.  New members to the Public Policy Committee are required to have previously attended “AWHONN on Capitol Hill” or another similar lobbying training within the past 5 years.   Experience as a Section Legislative Coordinator is a bonus but not mandatory.

 

 

 

Term: Begins January 1, 2020 and ends December 31, 2020. Members are eligible to serve two terms.

AWHONN Convention Program Committee 

The convention program committee is responsible for developing the convention’s educational content, selecting and inviting speakers, and identifying topics that will be of interest to attendees. 

 

The committee meets for a period of 17 months beginning February 2020. Following an initial face-to-face meeting in February, the committee meets once a month via conference calls that typically last 30 - 60 minutes. Attendance at the initial onsite meeting, active participation in the conference calls, attendance at the 2020 convention in Phoenix, Arizona and the 2021 convention at the Disney Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando are mandatory.

 

Program Committee (PC) candidates should have a broad network of professional contacts, be knowledgeable regarding current trends in clinical practice, research, education and professional issues.  Project management, previous conference planning and program planning skills are also highly desirable. 

 

The composition of the PC must include representation from women’s health, obstetrics, and neonatal nursing. The PC also strives to include representation from the academic, educational and administrative nursing communities. A committee chair is appointed and works jointly with the staff liaison to ensure the work of the committee is completed according to established timelines.

 

Specific duties of the PC include:

  1. Develop convention goals and objectives.
  2. Select topics and invite speakers for the pre-convention workshops, general sessions, nursing excellence sessions and selected specialty sessions.
  3. Review abstract categories and criteria. Make recommendations for change as appropriate.
  4. Review and score all submitted abstracts for innovative programs, case study and specialty sessions.
  5. Serve on site at the convention.  PC members are asked to door host, moderate sessions, assist attendees as needed and serve as ambassadors for AWHONN.

Term: The term of the Program Committee is 18-20 months. Each committee appointed one committee.

Educational Advisory Committee

 

The mission of the AWHONN Educational Advisory Committee is to provide the highest levels of educational products and services to our members, and to assure the engagement and development of nurse educators practicing in women’s health, obstetric and neonatal nursing while supporting those educators working in unique and diverse practice settings. This includes:

 

  • Increase competency of nurses caring for women and newborns, particularly in the Women’s Health, Obstetric, Newborn and Reproductive Health space
  • Ensure that AWHONN members may obtain quality educational programs and resources through multiple venues that enhance education and access
  • Elevate the practice of nursing

 

Qualifications:

  • AWHONN Member in good standing
  •  Direct contact with front-line nursing staff
  • MSN required
  • Interest in nursing education and development of nursing education offerings
  • Experience in the development of continuing nursing education activities or educational product development

 

Term: Each member will serve a term of two (2) years, and may reapply for an additional term. No Committee member may serve for greater than two terms, or four (4) years. AWHONN will be selecting three additional members in 2019 to add to the current Committee members. Term will begin January 1, 2020 and end December 31, 2021.

  

Commitment:

1)  Conference calls once per month and as needed in the event of identified urgent educational needs

2)  Participating in a face-to-face meeting once per year at Convention (attendance to the Convention is not paid)

Section Advisory Committee

The Section Advisory Committee (SAC) assist sections in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating strategies for success at the regional level. The SAC serves as a liaison between the districts, sections, chapters, the Board of Directors and Headquarters with activities, communications and AWHONN-lead initiatives. Committee members are eligible to serve two consecutive two-year terms and must have experience as an elected section leader or previously served on the AWHONN Board of Directors. Current elected Section Chairs and Secretary-Treasurers are not allowed to apply.

Expectations:

  • Responsible for hosting quarterly phone calls with leaders from their region.
  • Available for conference calls every other month and can meet once a year for an in-person meeting. Respond to questions or support requests from volunteer leaders and AWHONN Headquarters
  • Participate or offer feedback on national trainings, resources and webinars for volunteer leaders
  • Identify best practices and recurring challenges to address at AWHONN volunteer leadership trainings
  • Be a supportive representative/liaison of AWHONN’s national volunteer leadership at section/chapter meetings
  • Attend a mandatory one-day in-person meeting in conjunction with the AWHONN Convention

Time Commitment: An average of 1-2 hours per week, 4-6 hours per month + additional time during the January Volunteer Leadership Conference (Orlando, Florida – January 10-12, 2020) and AWHONN Convention.

District 8: Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York*

District 9: West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware*

District 10: Texas, Oklahoma*

District 11: Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama*

District 12: Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina*

Criteria:

  1. A current AWHONN member in good standing.
  2. Must have been a former elected section leader OR elected section secretary-treasurer OR were elected to the Board of Directors.
  3. Are not currently serving as an elected leader within AWHONN.
  4. Must reside in the district they are representing.

Research Advisory Panel

The Research Advisory Panel (RAP) is responsible for developing the Association’s research agenda, mentoring novice researchers, selecting recipients for AWHONN’s small grants program and scoring annual convention research, evidence-based practice and quality improvement abstracts and papers.    The committee is comprised of 5-6 full panel members and an unlimited number of corresponding members.

 


The RAP’s responsibilities include:

 

Full Panel members

  • Review research proposals and select recipients for the small grants research program.
  • Review abstracts for research, evidence-based practice and quality improvement presentations for AWHONN’s annual convention and select outstanding research poster awards.
  • Review applications for the Award of Excellence in Research and select recipient.
  • Respond to any research issues that require the input of the Research Advisory Panel.
  • Mentor novice researchers.

 

Corresponding Panel members

  • Review and score research proposals for the small grants research program.
  • Review abstracts for research, evidence-based practice and quality improvement presentations for AWHONN’s annual convention.
  • Respond to any research issues that require the input of the Research Advisory Panel.
  • Mentor novice researchers.

 

Term: Begins January 1, 2020 and ends December 31, 2021. The Chair, panel and corresponding members serve a two year term.  Full panel members are limited to serving one two-year term.  Corresponding panel members may serve multiple terms with no limit.  For 2020 there will be five openings for the Full Panel and an unlimited number of openings for corresponding members.
