Obstetric Patient Safety Classroom Course for Postpartum Hemorrhage





Course Description

The Obstetric Patient Safety (OPS) Classroom Course for Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH) is a one-day course that provides students with education on best practices and treatment principles known to effectively manage postpartum hemorrhage. This one-day course consists of didactic content, skills stations, and simulation exercises that include team debriefing.


Course Goal

The goal of the OPS Classroom Course for PPH is to disseminate postpartum hemorrhage best practices to obstetric clinicians. This will improve obstetric clinician’s recognition of, readiness for, response to, and reporting of postpartum hemorrhage providing greater access for women to receive early, effective, and aggressive lifesaving treatments for this obstetric emergency.


Course Objectives

The overarching objectives are to:

  • Discuss, review, and return demonstrate effective management for women who have excessive bleeding after giving birth.
  • Use simulation-based cognitive, behavioral, and technical learning strategies to practice management of postpartum hemorrhage.


Tools such as the PPH risk assessment, Quantification of Blood Loss (QBL) Process Map, Debriefing Form, PPH Management Algorithm, Oxytocin and QBL Practice Briefs, and other resources are a part of the course.  Participants will apply PPH knowledge by engaging in skill stations and simulation scenarios, with focus on the following:


Skills Stations

  • Comparing quantified and estimated blood loss
  • Review various aspects of PPH management
  • Indicating use and assisting with uterine balloon tamponade insertion


Simulation Scenarios

  • Assessing PPH Risk
  • Identifying the appropriate PPH Stage
  • Initiating a PPH protocol and mobilizing the team
  • Prioritizing and implementing resuscitation measures
  • Performing interventions known to effectively manage PPH
  • Identification  of maternal warning signs
  • Demonstrating effective communication and debriefing techniques



The AWHONN OPS Classroom Course for PPH is designed for clinicians who work in the perinatal setting.




Complete the PPH Online Education or the Obstetrical Hemorrhage Course from Gnosis for OB (APS)

Prior to attending the classroom course, each participant must complete the AWHONN PPH Education Course (online) or the Obstetrical Hemorrhage Course from Gnosis for OB. As proof of completion, participants are required to provide a copy of the certificate of completion to the instructor at the beginning of the class. The PPH Education Course (online) can be accessed at Under the Catalog tab, search for OPS.  If there are any questions regarding the online education, including issues with obtaining the certificate of completion, e-mail  Contact your hospital educator to determine if your hospital has access to the Obstetrical Hemorrhage Course from Gnosis for OB. 


Purchase the OPS Classroom Course for PPH Student Materials

In addition to completing the PPH Education Course (online), participants must purchase the OPS Classroom Course for PPH Student Materials. Student Materials must be purchased for each participant completing the classroom course. Materials cannot be shared or reused, as each resource contains a unique identification code that will allow each person to obtain a continuing education.

Additional Fees

Contact Hours

7.0 contact hours of CNE are provided.  Participants must attend the entire course to receive continuing nursing education (CNE) credit contact hours.
