AWHONN Career Resources for Students

Are you compassionate, well-organized, calm in a crisis and a critical thinker with good communication skills? A career in women’s health, obstetric or neonatal nursing might be right for you.
This field encompasses the full spectrum of women’s health throughout their lives. Some examples include:

  • OB/GYN nurses provide  women’s reproductive health care and assist women to prepare for pregnancy and childbirth.
  • Labor & Delivery nurses  provide care for women during pregnacy, the process of labor and birth and recovery.
  • Mother baby nurses care for women and their newborns in the postpartum period.
  • Neonatal nurses care for newborns in well baby nurseries as well as special care and high-risk neonatal settings. Women’s health nurses focus on conditions unique to women including reproductive health, fertility and menopause.

Nurses help women make the transition from pregnancy to motherhood and share the joy when families see and touch their babies for the first time. Families benefit from the education provided by nurses including  healthy pregnancy, coping with labor and birth, postpartum care, newborn care, and more. Nurses help women take charge of their health and prevent disease over their lifetimes. This is a field that is never stagnant, sometimes hectic, and always provides opportunities for lifelong growth and learning, on both personal and professional levels.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment of registered nurses is projected to grow 15 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations.  Average salaries will range from $69,000 to $80,000 a year, depending on the setting and geographic location. There is also a geographic variety in highest rates of employment and salaries so students should look at where jobs will be in the future. The Nurse Journal site has a state-by-state listing of jobs outlook.

The American Nurses Association publishes multiple reports on the excellent prospects in the future of nursing.
