This is a magnet template for hospitals with 3000 or more annual births

The postpartum period is a critical time to ensure women and their newborns are healthy. It is important to closely monitor a woman’s health during this recovery time – especially if she experienced complications during pregnancy or childbirth – as over half of maternal deaths occur during the first days, weeks, and months after childbirth. The most common yet preventable causes of severe maternal morbidity and maternal mortality include obstetric hemorrhage, severe hypertension, venous thromboembolism, infection and cardiac disease. During this time, mothers also are at risk for postpartum depression. Even healthy women who give birth are at risk for these complications.

AWHONN designed the Save Your Life magnet template to alert women to the signs of potentially life-threatening complications that could affect women after they give birth. This magnet was designed for a size of 4 inches x 6 inches.   The AWHONN POST-BIRTH Warning Signs detailed on the magnet template include:

·        P= Pain in your chest

·        O =Obstructed breathing or shortness of breath

·        = Seizures

·        T = Thoughts of hurting yourself or your baby

·        B =Bleeding that is soaking through one pad/hour, or blood clots the size of an egg or bigger

·        I = Incision that is not healing

·        R = Red or swollen leg that is painful or warm to touch

·        T= Temperature of 100.4° F or higher

·        H = Headache that does not improve, even after taking medicine, or bad headache with vision changes

The magnet template is not designed to act as a stand-alone product, but as a resource that can be given to mothers as part of comprehensive postpartum discharge planning and parent education. Nurses and other health professionals  who provide this education are strongly encouraged to complete  AWHONN’s Post-Birth Warning Signs online education.  AWHONN has developed this  course to help ensure that nurses who are responsible for postpartum discharge teaching and follow-up have the tools they need to  provide mothers and families this essential  information. Click here for more information about this online education program and other AWHONN Post-Birth Warning Signs professional and consumer resources.

Hospitals that purchase the magnet template will have a license to produce 4 x 6 inch magnets and can add their hospital logo to a specified area on the magnet. No other edits or alterations are permitted to be made to the magnet template.  The purchase price is based upon annual birth volume ranges (less than 1000, 1000-2999, 3000+).

Once purchased, hospitals will receive download files in the following formats: .eps, .jpg, or .pdf to use for magnet creation purposes.
