New Contraception Recommendations from the CDC

Newly released guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is intended to assist nurses and other health care providers as they counsel women and their partners about contraception access and use. The MEC (US Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use) includes recommendations for using specific contraceptive methods by women and men who have certain characteristics or medical conditions. The 2016 update provides new evidence-based recommendations for women with certain medical considerations (e.g. cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis, HIV, etc.); postpartum women; women who are breastfeeding; and more. Additionally, the 2016 US SPR (Selected Practice Recommendations for Contraceptive Use) updates recommendations for a select group of common, yet sometimes controversial or complex, issues regarding initiation and use of specific contraceptive methods..

For more information on the 2016 MEC and SPR, visit the CDC website. A free APP for each document is available for download.
