Washington, DC — We are deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic death of Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care unit nurse at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System, who was shot and killed by federal agents in Minneapolis on January 24, 2026.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and coworkers during this unimaginable time. We extend our sympathy to all who knew and worked with him, and we honor his commitment to nursing and patient care.
Nurses are increasingly exposed to violence while fulfilling their professional ethical duty to peacefully advocate for patients who face an injustice and violations of human rights. (American Nurses Association Code of Ethics, Provision 8.2). This provision states “nursing ought to and must stand up for those rights and demand accountability”. The events unfolding across the country, including federal agents present near or in healthcare settings, and ongoing clashes, raise serious concerns about the safety of healthcare professionals and communities.
AWHONN stands firmly against violence in any form, whether in the workplace or in our communities. We advocate for the protection of nurses and all healthcare workers, and for peaceful, de-escalated approaches to conflict that respect human life and dignity.
