Washington DC, October 12, 2023 — Commencement of Perinatal Nurses Week was recognized today in Congress.

Created by nurse members of the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) in 2019, Perinatal Nurses Week celebrates and acknowledges the commitment of women’s health, obstetric and neonatal nurses in supporting patients through their pregnancy journey. Perinatal Nurses Week is celebrated every year from October 1016.

“Perinatal nurses care for women, birthing persons, newborns, and their families every day. We are educators, coaches, and advocates and play a critical role in safeguarding healthy pregnancies, childbirth, and the postpartum experience,” said Shakira Henderson, PhD, DNP, MS, MPH, RNC-NIC, IBCLC. “We are honored to have the tireless work our nurses do recognized by a national celebration of Perinatal Nurses Week. On behalf of perinatal nurses, our sincere thanks and appreciation to Rep. David Joyce for introducing a resolution to recognize this fourth annual National Perinatal Nurses Week.”

Rep. Joyce introduced the resolution while Congress was in session today.

“Perinatal nurses are essential to ensuring women and their babies are kept healthy,” said Congressman David P. Joyce, Co-Chair of the Congressional Nursing Caucus. “By assisting women during pregnancy, birth, and post-partum, perinatal nurses play a critical role in patient and infant care. I am proud to help lead this resolution to bring awareness to the important work these nurses do.”
