The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2021 Synova Leadership Scholarship. Amy Garoutte, RNC-OB, and Autumn Mels, MSN-Ed, RNC-OB, C-EFM, CNE, will receive funding from AWHONN for conference registration to the 25th Anniversary Nurse Leadership Forum, sponsored by Synova, scheduled in Tucson, Arizona, November 15-18, 2021.
Garoutte is a nurse manager on the Birthplace at Goshen Hospital in Goshen, IN. She graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2004 and worked on The Birthplace for 15 years as a bedside nurse and shift coordinator before transitioning to the nurse manager role in April 2020. She is passionate about encouraging and fostering growth in others, especially those newer to the nursing profession.
Mels works as the Obstetrical Outreach Educator at the University of Chicago, where she provides education on maternal health topics to 14 hospitals within the network and participates in all hospitals’ morbidity and mortality reviews. She also serves on the site visit team for hospital redesignations with the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). She is an AWHONN FHM instructor whose interests include addressing the rising maternal morbidity and mortality rates through education, obstetrical emergencies, and maternal mental health concerns, and is halfway through her doctoral program.
