Washington, DC – The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) today presented the 2014 Award of Excellence in Research to Kathryn A. Lee, PhD, RN, FAAN, CBSM, for her excellence in nursing research and continued innovation in the delivery of care for women and their families. The award was presented at the AWHONN national convention in Orlando, Florida.
AWHONN presents its Award of Excellence in Research each year to an AWHONN member who demonstrates a history of conducting grant-funded research, publishes research in peer-refereed journals, reflects AWHONN goals and standards in their contributions to research, and demonstrates clinical applications in research.
Dr. Lee is a professor and associate Dean for Research at the University of California at San Francisco. Her current research explores the relationship between women’s sleep and reproductive issues. As the first nurse in the United States to be certified in Behavioral Sleep Medicine, Dr. Lee has been able to mentor other nurses and focus on the clinical relevance of sleep problems, as well as develop nursing focused therapeutics to help patients.
“Dr. Lee’s research into the correlation between sleep and reproductive issues is groundbreaking,” said AWHONN’s Chief Executive Officer, Lynn Erdman, MN, RN, FAAN. “With her research, nurses will have the tools and knowledge they need to counsel patients with challenging sleep disorders.”
Dr. Lee is widely published and has authored numerous chapters on sleeping behaviors. In addition, she is a founding member of the Society of Behavioral Sleep Medicine, as well as a member Sigma Theta Tau and the American Academy of Nursing.
